The Players

Logline

At last television and movie fans get the show that gives them all the latest news, reviews and behind-the-scenes gossip.

Synopsis

The Players is a studio-based series in a similar style to Top Gear that gets into the culture and heart of what we love about our movies and TV. It will be presented by three very opinionated and dynamic individuals, each with their own particular taste, but with one thing in common… they’re all television and movie junkies.

There is a huge media savvy market out there for this kind of inter-active, media based show. There are various clubs and sites based around the appreciation of TV and movies, while home entertainment culture has grown dramatically over the last few years and will continue to do so with the likes of movie download sites and recordable DVD players changing how we buy and view product. But none of this has been represented fully on TV.

The Players promises to be fully inter-active, utilizing a state-of-the-art website which will work to collect reviews, news and to create debate, while also supplying talking points and information for the show.

Audience participation will be organised through the web site, with members invited to the studio based on ideas or questions they suggest online. Participation will come in the form of questions for the studio guests, sound bites on the news topics of the day or mini-features if they are of a certain quality or relevance. The audience at home can text or email their opinions and take part in polls and competitions.

The show will be open to all movies and TV genres available to the Irish audience. Each episode will begin with our presenters discussing the latest news and gossip from the world of Movies and TV in a light-hearted manner, laced with audience comments. This will be followed by ‘The New Batch’, with each of the presenters taking turns to give us their two cents on the new cinema and DVD releases. Niall will grab comments from the studio audience at regular intervals.

For the ‘Audition’ section, Brian will interview this week’s studio guest from the world of Movies and TV, getting the celebrity scandal and finding out insider information from both industries. Sile will give us a run down on all the soap gossip, often visiting the various sets in a BBLB style tongue-in-cheek manner.

After the break, Brian will do a short appreciation of his Classic DVD’s, and our resident Goth will pick out his weird and downright dirty samples from the vaults of his DVD dungeon. Each night will be rounded off with the best of Next Weeks TV.

Extra-ordinary features will include:

  • Home Alone (road testing the newest and most over the top home entertainment technologies)
  • The League of Gentlemen (with reports on the Irish TV and movie industries and set visits),
  • Carnivale (with our presenters visiting various festivals the world over, soaking up the gossip and infiltrating pitching sessions with studio big wigs with their own crazy ideas),
  • The Contenders (where we can watch re-creation of classic scenes sent in by the show’s members)
  • Various other features dealing with the likes of B-Movies, Horror, controversial movies, reality TV, influential and idolised individuals and TV’s worst quiz shows.

As a returning series, the producers also envisage features that could carry on from year to year. One such feature will follow the development of certain Irish projects from start to finish, with ongoing reports and interviews with those involved.

Nine To Five will follow Niall as he tries out every job at every stage in movie and television production. Another feature will showcase the work of new and exciting Irish talent. Such features will open up a hidden world to the average Irish audience member, and help promote an industry that is there in essence to reflect their lives and culture.
